If you're reading this website, you are probably thinking about consulting with an attorney.  Here are some tips to help you get the most out of an initial meeting with your prospective lawyer:

Seek help early.

An attorney can offer valuable insight into evolving situations, as well as guidance about documenting certain problems.  An attorney can also help you prepare records that will later strengthen your legal claim.  There is simply no substitute for receiving good advice as soon as possible.

Be prepared.

Practice describing your situation and make a list of the questions you want to ask an attorney during the initial consultation.  You may think you will remember them; however, many people forget to ask questions because of the new information they are receiving.

Bring documentation if possible.

While you don't need to fully document your claim for an initial consultation, there may be one or two key items (like a contract or several emails) that could help an attorney evaluate the strength of your case.  Have these ready so that you can get the best advice possible.

Tell your prospective attorney the whole story.

Often, prospective clients want to be perceived in the best light possible and forget to mention important facts that would be used by the other side.  Attorneys have heard a lot and will not judge you for things that may have happened during a stressful period.  Telling the whole truth at the outset will allow an attorney to give you the best possible legal advice.
